About the Principal
Elizabeth Dalzell

“Education can be viewed as a tapestry that is worked steadily for years, in unison, by home and school. A tapestry that combines the skills, support, patience and guidance of those who have shared their talents along the way. When completed, step back and look closely, you have a masterpiece that was woven by many hands – small pieces at a time.”
The final masterpiece may take the form of a student who experiences a personal accomplishment, an educator who touches the hearts of students who have shown years of frustration, or a school celebrating their community of learners. Horizon Middle School is my personal tapestry!
District 49 entered my life as I began 2nd grade. Many loose threads lay ahead of me with only dreams of what my final tapestry would become. Through the years, I was encouraged and guided to take advantage of opportunities that would allow me to arrive at this point.
I was named the HMS principal in the spring semester of 2025, after spending more than a decade serving as the assistant principal.
I first joined Falcon School District after receiving my Bachelor of Science in Biology/Chemistry from Northern State University. While teaching science at Horizon Middle School and Patriot Learning Center, I earned my Master of Science in Space Studies and a year later, began my MS in Educational Leadership.
As an educational leader at HMS, my passion is for every student to understand their inner strength as they learn to advocate for their personal and educational needs.
Horizon students must be prepared to enter their high school years with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to become successful and contributing citizens of our community and world. Our Horizon educational team will work alongside your students to encourage and celebrate their accomplishments, highlight what makes them unique in a diverse world, and prepare them for a successful high school experience.
As a parent and/or guardian of a Horizon Middle School student, your support and encouragement is highly valuable to making your child’s middle school years a success! Let us work together in encouraging our students to take advantage and become involved in all the great opportunities Horizon has to offer!
